Почему английский язык такой трудный

Говоря о коробках, произносим мы: boxes
Но быков называем мы oxen, не oxes.
Гусь один — это goose, если два — это geese,
Но один лось иль два будут moose*, а не meese.
Мышка — mouse, если много, называются mice,
Почему же дома это houses, не hice?

Человек будет man, много их будут men,
Но зачем сковородки это pans, а не pen?
Foot — нога, если две их, называются feet,
Boot — ботинок, но два — это всё же не beet!
Tooth — один зуб, но зубы называются teeth,
Booth — палатка, но много это booths, а не beeth.

That — одно, если три, произносим мы: those,
Hat — одна шляпа, много это hats, а не hose,
Кошка — cat, но о кошках не скажем мы cose!
Brother — брат, но о братьях говорим мы brethren,
И при этом две мамы будут mothers, не methren,
Если он это he, говорим мы his, him...**
She — она, почему же нет ни shis и ни shim?

If the plural of man is always called men,
Why shouldn’t the plural of pan be called pen?
If I speak of my foot and show you my feet,
And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
Why shouldn’t the plural of booth be called beeth?

Then one may be that, and three would be those,
Yet hat in the plural would never be hose,
And the plural of cat is cats, not cose.
We speak of a brother and also of brethren,
But though we say mother, we never say methren.
Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
But imagine the feminine: she, shis and shim!
