Cleopatra Egyptia femina fuit, totius orbis fabula.

1. Спеши на пир, великий Марк-Антоний !
2. Навстречу - как блестящий хризолит -
3. галера для роскошных церемоний,
4. по волнам в море пурпурном бежит.
5. Царица ждёт, она на тирском ложе,
6. облокотясь, присела отдохнуть,
7. витая змейка-брошь ползёт по коже,
8. из платья чуть выглядывает грудь.
9. Над ней колышут перья опахала,
10. и волосы струятся, как вино,
11. в котором, глянешь, - пламя засверкало.
12. Обилие волос заплетено

13. и с воздухом спаялось в поцелуе,
14. и, будто в нём внутри веретено,
15. все пряди завиваются, чаруя.
16. Всё вьётся и струится заодно.
17. С бушприта до кормы под тенью тентов -
18. похожее на пение сирен
19. звучанье музыкальных инструментов
20. и аромат, берущий души в плен.
21. Здесь гостя ждут бечисленные яства -
22. соперничество фиников и дынь
23. и нильского плодового богатства.
24. Царица ждёт – глядит в морскую синь.

25. Что ж медлит он ? С каким придёт подарком
26. её почтить. Не с хитрым ли смешком
27. о чувстве ей поведает он жарком,
28. С любовью и с коварством он знаком.
29. Но вот и подошла его галера,
30. звучанием фанфар предупредив.
31. Его гребцы усердствовали в меру,
32. лишь слышен был играемый мотив.
33. В ту ночь ценнейшую из всех жемчужин
34. Антоний преподнёс царице сам:
35. «А будь здесь пол-империи к тому же,
36. и то бы положил к твоим ногам».

37. Любовь вскипала, набирая силу
38. всю ночь по ходу пира-торжества.
39. Египетская магия хранила
40. немало ухищрений колдовства
41. Ей не терпелось показать пошире,
42. чтоб поразило сразу и врасплох,
43. сосредоточенное в пышном пире
44. наследство многих жизней и эпох,
45. богатство, расточамое сразу;
46. всё, чем владела; сказочный Восток,
47. представленный в пиру, как для показа;
48. чем славен в Царстве каждый уголок.

49. Сияли драгоценные каменья
50. несчётных украшений и корон –
51. хоть по одной на каждое владенье,
52. на каждый ей принадлежащий трон.
53. И стайка стройных юниц без порока
54. с руками в кольцах, обнося гостей,
55. их потчевала винами Востока
56. и увлекала прелестью своей.
57. Рабыни с Инда в бисере богатом,
58. став возле ложа Клеопатры в ряд,
59. к ней воздух с аравийским ароматом
60. нагнать от всех курильниц норовят.

61. А середина праздничной галеры
62. превращена в арену для затей.
63. Там дикий эфиоп смирял пантеру
64. и управлялся с парой нильских змей.
65. Певец, артист, - кто сам, кто в лад со всеми –
66. и каждый в упоении поёт –
67. сливая звуки, чаровали время,
68. плели для душ подобия тенёт.
69. И вот, подставив драгоценный кубок,
70. затем, чтобы налили ей вина –
71. пахучего, с расцветкой алых губок –
72. царица дерзкой храбрости полна.

73. Чтоб не было то пиршество забытым,
74. её роскошное житьё-бытьё,
75. она, в пример всем дамам знаменитым,
76. тщеславие потешила своё.
77. Она встряхнула в кубке драгоценном,
78. куда налили кислого вина,
79. свою жемчужину с напитком пенным,
80. и выпила всё разом и до дна.
81. Как раз в тот час взыграли волны выше,
82. и вся галера грузно поднялась.
83. И,хрипы моря грозного услыша,
84. вдали зардела утренняя ясь.

1: SHE made a feast for great Marc Antony:
2: Her galley was arrayed in gold and light;
3: That evening, in the purple sea and sky,
4: It shone green-golden like a chrysolite.
5: She was reclined upon a Tyrian couch
6: Of crimson wools: out of her loosened vest
7: Set on one shoulder with a serpent brooch
8: Fell one arm white and half her foamy breast.
9: And, with the breath of many a fanning plume,
10: That wonder of her hair that was like wine—
11: Of mingled fires and purples that consume,
12: Moved all its mystery of threads most fine—

13: Moved like some threaded instrument that thrills,
14: Played on with unseen kisses in the air
15: Weaving a music from it, working spells
16: We feel and know not of—so moved her hair:
17: And under saffron canopies all bright
18: With clash of lights, e'en to the amber prow,
19: Crept like enchantments subtle passing sight,
20: Fragrance and siren music soft and slow.
21: Amid the thousand viands of the feast,
22: And Nile fruits piled in panniers, where they vied
23: With palm-tree dates and melons of the East,
24: She waited for Marc Antony and sighed.

25: —Where tarries he ?—What gift doth he invent
26: For costly greeting ?—How with look or smile,
27: Out of love treasures not already spent
28: Prepares he now her fondness to beguile?
29: —But lo, he came between the whiles she sighed;
30: Scarce the wave murmurs troubling,—lo, most dear,
31: His galley, with the oars all softly plied,
32: Warned her with music distant, and drew near.
33: And on that night—for present,—he did bring
34: A pearl; and gave it her with kissing sweet:
35: “Would half the Roman empires were this thing,”
36: He said, “that I might lay them at your feet.”

37: Fairly then moved the magic all arrayed
38: About that fragrant feast; in every part
39: The soft Egyptian spells did lend their aid
40: To work some strange enamouring of the heart.
41: It was her whim to show him on that night
42: All she was queen of; like a perfect dream,
43: Wherein there should be gathered in one sight
44: The gold of many lives, as it might seem
45: Spent and lived through at once,—so she made pass
46: A splendid pageantry of all her East
47: Beauteous and captive,—so she did amass
48: The richness of each land in that one feast.

49: More jewelries than one could name or know,
50: Set in a thousand trinkets or in crowns
51: Each one a sovereignty, in glittering row
52: Numbered the suppliant lands and all her thrones.
53: And fairest handmaidens in gracious rank,
54: Their captive arms enchained with links of gold,
55: Knelt and poured forth the purple wine she drank,
56: Or served her there in postures manifold.
57: And beaded women of a yellow Ind
58: Stood at the couch, with bended hand to ply
59: Great silver feathered fans wherein the wind
60: Gat all the choicest fumes of Araby.

61: There in the midst, of shape uncouth and hard,
62: Juggled his arts some Ethiopian churl;
63: Changing fierce natures of the spotted pard
64: Or serpents of the Nile that creep and curl.
65: And many a minstrelsy of voice and string,
66: Twining sweet sounds like tendrils delicate,
67: Seemed to ensnare the moments—seemed to cling
68: Upon their pleasure all interminate.
69: But now at length she made them serve her wine
70: In the most precious goblet,—wine that shed
71: Great fragrance, in a goblet fair with shine
72: Of jewels: so they poured the wine out red:

73: And lo, to mark that more than any feast
74: And honour Antony,—or for mere pride
75: To do so proud a vanity, at least
76: The proudest, vainest, woman ever tried—
77: She took the unmatched pearl, and, taking, laughed;
78: And when they served her now that wine of worth
79: She cast it gleaming in; then with the draught
80: Mingling she drank it in their midst with mirth.
81: And all that while upon the ocean high,
82: The golden galley, heavy in its light,
83: Ruled the hoarse sea-sounds with its revelry—
84: Changing afar the purples of the night!
