На деле чтенье по руке, по почерку, по лицам -
как перевод - почти искусство.
И некий джентльмен, охотник до девиц,
предложит Школьнице вдвоём повеселиться,
авось та из корысти согласится ?
Но в Даме Старше строже были б чувства.

Бине и Роршах не нужны. Всё б понял и глупец.
Ведь ясно, ежели жива-здорова,
когда пошёл уже восьмой десяток лет,
малейший стресс нарушит все основы
и не нужны ей треволненья снова.
Вслед новым горестям придёт её конец.

Пусть прежде пили б ром из туфелек Её,
была ль наставницею, полной пыла,
вела ли богомольное житьё,
страдала ль замужем, нето теряла сына ? -
Теперь по сути дела всё едино.
Давно уж всё перенесла, всё позабыла и простила.                                  

Дерзай художник, и рисуй Её в любых местах,
хоть в рисовых полях, нето в трущобе,
при светлых или мутных небесах,
в зелёном плюше, у стены кирпичной -
рисунок будет гармоничный,
как дань почтенья несгибаемой особе.

     From the plain fact that she is alive and well;
         For when one is eighty
     Even a teeny-weeny bit of greed
         Makes one very ill indeed,
And a touch of despair is instantaneously fatal:

Whether the town once drank bubbly out of her shoes or whether
     She was a governess with a good name
         In Church circles, if her
     Husband spoiled her or if she lost her son,
         Is by this time all one.
She survived whatever happened; she forgave; she became.

So the painter may please himself; give her an English park,
     Rice-fields in China, or a slum tenement;
         Make the sky light or dark;
     Put green plush behind her or a red brick wall.
         She will compose them all,
Centering the eye on their essential human element.
