Arthur O’Shaughnessy A Duet: Piano and Violoncello

Dedicated to M. Laserre.
PIANO (preluding).
1: THERE is a land above the land where life
2: Frets the dull chains of speech, and strains the ear,
3: And wearies out the heart in passionate strife
4: With sullen fate; and there, released from fear
5: And doubt, and putting off the earthly veil,
6: The soul finds solitudes akin to those
7: Her infinite sadnesses; moonlit and pale
8: Those pathways gleam: no sun ere rose
9: On such receding shores; but lengthening waves
10: Of the soul's urgent ocean reach and break
11: Upon them, wailing round remembered graves
12: Where buried lie the hopes she did forsake.

13: There with an infinite utterance, more than words,
14: I ask those things that never life hath found
15: Response to; there with stricken, grieving chords,
16: I mourn, I weep, I pour forth the great sound
17: Of all the desolate groaning of my days,
18: Till an unearthly echo takes my soul,
19: Become that sound, up into loftier ways,
20: Where it is almost bliss to bear my dole;
21: Or soon the luminous cloud-work of a dream
22: Hath wrapt me in its frail delicious heaven;
23: Or, rarely, one voice, gifted it would seem
24: With the sole tone to blend with mine, and even
25: Out of its own great yearning answer me,
26: Hath wrought me such content through sweetest strain
27: Of lofty converse, that the end would be,
28: If not of joy, a sadness one were fain
29: To live and die with,—Ah, that voice again!

VIOLONCELLO. 30: Thou call'st me then! and dost thou not divine
31: My soul hath longed for thine,
32: Since last in rare exalted mood we met,
33: And spake and sang and wept
34: Things we can ne'er forget,
35: Songs that our souls have kept,
36: And tears that still combine?

PIANO. 37: Whence com'st thou, soul that once so joyed with mine?

VIOLONCELLO. 38: I lingered in Vienna, dreaming still
39: Some rhapsodies to fill
40: The aching years, and lift them from their grief.
41: That grief, rememberest thou?
42: It is nor light nor brief;
43: Dost thou remember how
44: Thine own tears wrought relief?

PIANO. 45: Yea, grieving soul, and I would hear thee now.

VIOLONCELLO. 46: The thing I loved is lost for evermore!
47: I sing me o'er and o'er
48: The name thereof, and nothing answers me.
49: And year by year the earth,
50: And heaven and the sea,
51: Promise me nothing worth
52: In years that are to be.

53: I had a high belief that like a star
54: Made light for me afar,
55: Ruling life's cloudlands with a distant spell,
56: Now, or the darkness grows,
57: Or the star paled and fell,
58: And only as a vision my soul knows
59: That loftier thing that glorifies a day,
60: An hour, then fades away,—
61: Leaving a palace with the lights burned down,
62: A soul sitting in gloom,
63: Uncrowned that wore a crown,
64: A temple with no priest—a tomb.

From “Songs of a Worker”, 1881.
