1. THE DREAM

I had a dream.
At first it was
exactly as in life:
the over-fed crowd
hastened to fill their bellies
with food and drink.
We moved away from there.

Along the wide and dusty road
the trolley-bus had driven like a mountain.
“HURRY-UP!” — said Lena
and in a flash
she ran across the noisy road
and went through the door.

I rushed after her,
but my legs didn’t answer me.
They were crossed,
and one leg
prevented the other from moving.
In vain
I tried to untie them.
with clumsiness
I jumped
and swung my arms.

Cars dashed away from me
as from a plague-stricken man.
I saw Lena
in the trolley-bus window.
but she couldn’t help me anymore.

I cried:
"IT’S IMPOSSIBLE,
MY LEGS ARE CRO-O-OSSED",
and jumped
and jumped again.

The trolley-bus stood still.
The driver with the crumpled cloth cap on
gave me a puzzled look.
Then he lit up a cigarette,
and suddenly,
he spat contemptuously
and turned away.

Питьём и пищей;

Другой мешала двигаться;

И размахивал руками;
Как от чумного;

2. THE FRIEND

The friend was like a friend,
The circle was like a circle,
And suddenly I fell down
And the darkness came.

And suddenly here is a prison,
And suddenly here is a cage,
And suddenly I realize
That my friend is my enemy.

(18 February 1981, Moscow.
English version: Keele, 1993)

3. WHEN EVERY LIVING THING…

(From "Prologue")

When every living thing on Earth will die
and the dead planet will turn
into a cosmic dust,
when the Sun will be out
and instead of
the flaming Galaxies
will appear the myriad of black holes,
then all my music,
my poems and pictures
will turn into a gloomy nothing.
I realize it,
but at the same time
some ardour inside
is hurrying me to take a scrap of paper
and sharpen a pencil.

(September 1981, Moscow.
English version: Keele, 1993)

3. * * *

4. DELIRIUM

What a terrible mess
is in my brain sometimes!
Like now, for example, but I‘m ill
and probably that’s why this nonsense has come.

I want to say: boo-boo, buzz-buzz,
bubonic Beelzebub, bring a barrel of bromine,
begin to butt the brazen ballerinas,
bestow the bouquets to busty bomb-shells.

Blind bloodless bugs
are biting, bothering, bustling,
beaming with beads, bleaching with brims,
broken, brittle bastards.

Bagpiper Bach, boisterous Beethoven,
boiling Berlioz, bloating Brahms,
are bubbling, blustering, banging, beating,
bombing my brain with boomerangs of batons.

The brushwood, bushes, barbarous branches,
the barren bogs, brooks, burrows and by-ways,
the Blessed Benefactor beardless and barefooted
betaken to the boundless abyss of Being.

(3 July 1981, Moscow.
English version: Keele, 1993)

5. MY WORLD

I created my world as Sabaoth did
with a foam of sounds, with a clay of words,
with the streams of colours and lines —
green, red, yellow and blue.

I’m living in it as Sabaoth is
in the middle of the Universes and Ages.
I’m growing old little by little,
the very image of God.

(17 July 1981, Sortavala.
English version: Keele, 1993)

6. ON TIME
(From “Seneca”)

Win over for yourself,
protect and save your time,
so that it won’t be stolen
or won’t be lost for nothing.

They take away our time by force,
they thieve it and sometimes
it flows away in vain.
No shame worse than that waste.

Just look, most of our lives
we are spending on evil deeds,
we are spending on idleness,
not as we would like it to be.

(17 July 1981, Sortavala.
English version: Keele, 1993)

7. ONCE MORE ON TIME
(From “Seneca”)

Do you know anyone
who could evaluate time?
Do you know anyone
who could know what day is worth
and realize
that death is coming
together with each hour?

We can see our death
only before us
and we ignore
the dying behind us.
But don’t forget it:
everything thathas already happened
is also death.

So, behave like this:
don’t waste any hour,
try to hold
every day in your hands,
but if you choose
to delay till to-morrow,
you have lost this day
and together with it your life.

(17 July 1981, Sortavala.
English version: Keele, 1993)

Только впереди;

8. MISTERIOSO

Which flowers are growing there
In the garden beyond the white fence?
Nobody knows, only you
overcome that barrier,
came into that unknown garden,
picked the Mimosa of Eternity,
and brought it back
in your enigmatical Misterioso.

(13 October 1981, Sortavala.
English version: Keele, 1993)

8. MISTERIOSO

Misterioso.

9. ANOTHER GARDEN

There infrared roses are growing
In a photon of the flaming spheres,
And dragonflies are singing songs of parting
And filling the enclosure with ultrasound.

There, neutrino flocks are rushing
Indefatigable like ballerinas
And the doomed isotope is creeping
Along the ligature of the sinuous paths.

There, ultrasound waves a swashing
Filled with mysterious rustle
And alpha, beta and gamma rays are glimmering
With the vagueness in the night.

There, tears of corpuscles are flowing
From the fissures of the fathomless eye-sockets
And sinusoids of pink muscles are shivering
Because of the decay of the particles.

There, all the troubles and joys of the world,
Are running through the black holes,
Through the crooked mouth of space,
Into the hungry belly,

And into the guts of the ugly serpent
Named by the gloomy name Entropy
And they are vanishing in the dense rotation,
On the threshold of the cosmic death.

Ультразвуком заполнив вольер;

Обречённый ползёт изотоп;

Альфа-, бета-, и гамма-лучи;

Синусоиды розовых мускул;

10. LEONARDO ABOUT NOTHING

What has happened is nothing because it’s already happened.
What’s going to happen is nothing because it’s only going to have happened.
There exists only something that happens in this moment,
but the moment is so infinitesimal
that it is nothing for anyone.

(23 July 1983, Moscow
English version: Keele, 1993)

11. MUSE

What are you babbling about? What nonsense are you talking?
Don’t you know that all your tricks are senseless?
Calm down my Muse, skittish Fairy.
Should I be falling with you into this sin?

It’s a shame for a Goddess to be too persistent.
Stop your flight around my head,
stop putting on airs, giggling, whisper, sorcery,
I’ve learned to live without it in the foreign land.

Leave me alone, enough to tickle me with your rhymes,
I remember that no good came of this mischief.
But all is vain and phrases are rising like waves,
One word is leading to another and they flood my notebook.

(19 November 1992, train London-Totnes.
English version: Keele, 1993)

12. THE BUS

AvtObus — in Russian, in English: bus
or a boos, as they call it here in Keele,
is carrying me along the streets of Newcastle,
and the sky of a butter colour,
and raisins of birds, and persimmons of clouds,
and cucumbers of trees, and houses
resembling brown loaves,
and street lamps like toadstools,
and a salad of lawns, and fried eggs of puddles
are flying to meet me. In what out-of-the-way place
the bus of this life has brought me!
Moustached black man enjoying his cigarette,
and darkening the interior with his stygian smoke
is turning the steering wheel — he is bald-headed like Charon.

(28 July 1993, Keele)

13. THE GARDEN OF DREAMS

When we can’t find
a harmony in our lives
we retreat into the world of sounds
and spend
blissful hours there.
We are hovering like Elves
over the garden of pure dreams
and speaking to God
in the language of dragon-flies.
On the riverside
at a bend of Time
we are weaving sounds
into the harmonious accords
and tight rhythms
into the ringing wreaths.
We are seeing a World in a grain of sand,
and are holding Infinity
in a palm of our hand
and each hour
is passing like Eternity,
but life calls us come back,
Alas! Alas!

(28 July 1993, Keele)

На языке стрекоз;

14. FAREWELL

O magician of sounds, maestro Slava,
What a furious volcano is extinct!
But the music of your impassionate lava
Still captivates us.

You were the melodious soul for music.
What the 20th century would be without you?
And how we can endure this loss?
Farewell, a great and glorious man!

(27 April 2007, St Albans.
Translated 6 May 2007, St Albans)

В "THE FRIEND" мои слабые познания английского языка не позволяют мне понять фразу "I feel down". Может быть, имеется в виду "I fall down" или "I fell down"?
