Jesus, mom, you used to write me:
“Sonny, things will be okay”,
But yourself have shut eyes tightly
On a sudden and wrong day.

Motionless you lay who often
Seemed her lifetime through awake,
Now with nothing good to offer
For whoever comfort’s sake.

The relatives all came flying
Even the furthest who’d believe,
Sat like ravens black and crying,
Everybody lost in grief.

The frustration seemed much stronger
To survive its plague by then,
It was mine and no longer
Anyone on earth’s concern.

It came true that I’d be lonely
Altogether since that day.
Only kids… but kids are only.
“Sonny, things will be okay”.

DREAM

The dream gone it’s just a recall of
My way along a wall led by your face
Above the sheltered under your palm clove
Of candle flame exhaling smoky lace.
The shadows suddenly moved swept around…
It was your fault, the darkness took its loot,
Look at your palm if there might be found
The trace of dreamed up rivulet of soot.

TO MY FRIEND

The first this year snow was absurd.
Since having left my coat taken off in
A cloakroom I was taken home aboard
A strange car like within a swaying coffin.

The driver’s face to me seemed clad in mist,
To him my didn’t, though we talked at ease on,
He took no fare as if from a deceased
And sped away through night. No clever reason

I offered my wife when home, she would
Accept none, fine, I wasn’t one persistent.
She did my bed, I ate my late night food,
Then lights went dark, the world went nonexistent.

Next day to consciousness but pretty bleak
My daughter’s face brought me, like that of angels,
But still unlike before, it was too weak
To wake up any hope on which a man dwells…

Then I recalled, that I had you on earth…

The day I depart going further
And wave farewell, You’ll let loose
The three hounds chasing each other
Along the fresh prints of my shoes.

My throat will get, no fears,
Torn first, when crisscrossed with a rain
The town from view disappears
Neck deep in the misfortune pain.

The next dog will jump my back snarling
When I reach the halfway from thee
And whisper: “Forgive me my darling,
Let’s drop it petit a petit”.

The third dog will get lost somewhere
And die in the steppe or wood fog,
Like men drunk with wine in despair,
Themselves madder then any dog.

Забудем petit a petit».

EPITAPH

Hey, passerby, beneath this stone,
Pet rabbit one, I rest in peace,
This morning, my sides ice cold grown,
They found me. My little miss

Will not cry sadder ever after,
Her apron muffling sobs and mourn,
Face down in a wasteland scattered
With sunbaked rocks and weeds of thorn.

She’ll never find this quiet power
As she beside this toy grave did,
Discovering at such an hour
That mankind’s coolness towards a kid.

Much later on tired with the struggle
To fathom this world far from good
She will remember this and chuckle…
Well, I have done the best I could.

DOG

I’ll get used to your hands without hurry,
A mongrel who remembers mostly plights,
Who wonders at your voice and evenings starry
With constellations of the city lights.

In my halfmemory of days remote
The gloom rings as a midday horsefly for
The lazy men’s talk and a fishing boat,
The bank, the young girl with a dripping oar,

Who fished out the net with it and scowled
At me beside the shaky wooden quay
So hard that everything within me growled
Or else she called and all was blooms in me.

To Whom It May Concern:

I have been fortunate to read some of Mr. Alexander Sotnikov’s translations from the Russian of contemporary poetry. They are very impressive. Mr.Sotnikov not only renders the meaning of the original Russian poems clearly and concisely, but he is able also to produce a mood and feeling in English that is appropriate to the subject and reflective of the original. Unlike many translations, Mr. Sotnikov’s result in English poetry that is a pleasure to read. I would feel very comfortable in giving Mr.Sotnikov any task involving Russian-English translation.

Sincerely,

C.Woodruff Starkweather, Ph.D.
