Cid Corman The Bearer

The faring was wide; thus rose Atlas
between the straits of a kiss and a kiss.
The sphere was a flavor of light, a star
darkened by centuries from its neighbor.

At first the mountains were soft and the peaks
runneled snow, cleancing the rough evergreens,
the rocks unclenching. Then, the winds loosened
winter: sky expanded an ice-gray mass.

The bearer bent there then, the light basing.
The narrows of his flash crying with sweet.
Fists opened in his heart, but nothing gave,
Emptiness, like a brain, begged to be dumb.

Then, the shoulder trembled and segged, slowly.
The ball on his backbone, borne and balanced,
dropped. Listen ! But there is nothing to hear.
The sea is dense. A world falls like a tear.

Cid Corman Cockatoo

The lazy yellow cockatoo, at home
down under in antipodal cold, accepts

its outdoor cage with worn aplomb:
its narrow beak curving arrogantly.

Its sharply delineated claws exact
a hold and a half on sanctuary bars

Those of us who come to take a look
away with us of its resourcefulness

and lemon-thin skin are not aware,
and care less, that its given place in the air

is less then usual dosage science requires
for perfect normal family life; of course,

it has its choice of two between two kinds
of mongrel cockatoos and all the breeze

The cage can carry. Some of us, the best
of pets, clucks between the throat and palate,

arriving at a jest the cockatoo,
by natural affinity, may master,

and must, as a token to sex, flurry its crest,
the fan of feathers creating its head;

but we offer only our goodbyes
and mash of words: guttural scraps of tone,

it pulls itself by the leak to the wire edge
closer and cocks its horntipped weapon, tense

with hospitality. It leaks there locked,
until we starts to go off; then it drops

back into its deep retreat, saying
something to itself we'd rather not hear.

Cid Corman The Groves of Colonos

His daughters out of touch, veering
past argument into the sheer shade of great cypress
and olive-trees greener than the greens of springs -
oiled continually within by sap of the seed -,
the old man with his hair stuck white in his blunt eyes
passes in and is gone, imagine, gone !

The girls hang on in the sullen sunlight
suddenly lonely in the bare embarassement,
where before only the shame of shame itself had hung
upon them, like old women's black shouldering shawls:
a peace is past, tough it seemed like a thousand miles
om Thebes on the back roads painfully out.

Yet they, in the distant instant, are less lost
than that ignorance of two brothers
who would contend for the pity of his life,
the pity of petty victory, the good proof
of how love grows blind between too sons
and an old man, vain and petulant, hypocrisy.

Cid Corman After Reading Keat's Letter

Poor Keats had died again in my mind that day
and it was only right, then, to be climbing
up Hymmettus to the famed hives of honey
possessiones by the smoked-out stunted cypress.

On another park drunk Greeks echoed a chant,
like the shards of voices broken upon mountains.
I mounted, through white and orange-white
nd true-red oleander, and at the terraced height

found a fountain where soup stains faded
and the evening air escaped fresh from her blue bath
and there, like a clue, up the stone walls
hung honeysucle. And the bees in garden of thyme.

Only, however, at a promontory beyond
before an abandoned bysantine chapel
where a lizard slunk under the door
and a master cricket leapt upon the facing,

lost in the presence of a life he had left
for lost, only there did I stop, stare out
over the ancient site, Aсropolis and all,
jewelled into the sea through electricity,

rise to Salamis, Parnassus in the haze,
discover the western star
rededicatated the immensity of the sky,
and I drank, with silent ouzel, health to a dead poet.
Atens, 1955

Cid Corman The marriage of Bacchus and Ariadne

He needed her help. It was as simple as that.
After all, bravery must have some luck to survive.
That she dogged his steps was too much luck
and at the first permissible restingplace,
where vegetation seemed soft enough to assure her
full refuge, she was left in the maze of her sleep.

When she woke she came to a slow awakening
that she had been betrayed by her own tired trust,
her own despair for escape. here she was, then,
enchanting an empty island, another luxury
among luxuriance, a loneliness contained
in a climate of isolate hot whispers .

Only. as day deepened into the ledge
of the sea, that strangle of motioning green,
blue, green, did aflurry of lyncean mischief
bear into view the utmost attitude of the flesh,
a figure flattered by savagery and messes of laurel,
sculptured purple out of a wish of a dream.

A flailing of cymbals lunged in her heart.
The emptiness poured back on itself with a cry,
a crying, a reminiscence of waiting to die.
And the night closed over on over like part
of a ceremony. Music entered the body's kiss.
So, she exchanged a vow of stars with a born god.

Cid Corman Backtalk from the Minotaur

My head was animal. At least
that was the verdict. I had no choice.
The innerness of encirclement
my father devised. I was gotten, they tell,
by a bull. And my mother a queen !
Legend pierces entrancement.

I had no choice. My amazement was
complete. My diet was human condiment,
fixed by that king of men,
my father. What had I to do
with a hunger kept caught
among the inescapable corridors of skin ?

Officially, I was the beast.
I was the guilt that shamed an empire
and robbed Athens of its youth.
I... The invention of mystery.
So many answers to confound the blood,
o make of madness a sacrifice.

In the darkness of my being
led a man not man enough,
given heroic tyranny,
deduced by need, given the clue of exit
by a lost lady, that more my human half,
my sister, fallacy, my hope.

I had no choice. My mother a queen.
My father the king of men. The hero,
my sister's traitor, entered my halls,
cautious, a sword for a hand, a fear
that was my end and his fault,
and I raised my double head at him...

His treachery is dull.
His unravelling world I hardly follow
now. I savor the trench of the blade
through tissue against my skull's bone
The depth of that transfigurement was light.
I speak from a death that holds me still.

Cid Corman Invocation

Monstrous, enigma, paradox, the rope
with a horn in its hang, holding the center,
burning the air with its bellows, as the air
bells back, the taunt becoming a spire.

Ask for the sky. Nothing is less than enough.
The body projects heroics. I shrink.
Or die in the ceaseless plunge, crowding
the bubbles of the sea in my hot splash.

The sky accept my offer. It is immortal.
It has nothing to lose. It shares
its winters of imperceptibles seeds
and summers of imperceptibles snows.

And in this place. And at this time.
His name was... Well, tell me, tell me again, what is
your name ? I know how much you fear to be known.
Being identified, you are possessed.

Not, possessor, you have the sun and moon.
What will you do ? Will you hang these heads
on a spindle of limbs and scramble, crouched,
into the low impractical playground alone ?

You asked for the sky and you abandon it.
So enter and go. Cry out: paradox, enigma.
The noose paces the air. A horn pricks
the veins of the flesh. I am life.

To be hero, to be martyr, to be man,
I seek answers where there can only be
resolutions. Amazement hangs by the throat.
Cut the body down. The blast survives.

Build, by all means build your monster.
You are Pacifaё, Minos, Ariadne.
The cage is Dedalus. Death is Icarus.
The sea is wide and the feathers are the sun's.

Cid Corman Leda

After the god had realized his need
he was abashed to find himself a swan -
he felt himself confused at coming on
so - but now the disguise drew him to the deed

before understanding the walkening
creature's feeling. and she at the dawn
perceived now his coming into the swan
and knew now: he wanted something

she - bewildered in her opposing stance -
no longer could keep from him. He came down
and pushing past her ever weaker hands

lost his godhead in the belovedest.
Then he first found happiness in his down
and truly became swan within her nest.

Cid Corman* The Ways

the car grinding the gravel path
chicken-wire gate showed back

earth shuts off sounds
sky a senseless weight

winds catching a few dry leaves
to spin and kick about

laud goes out in stubble
spaces behind mountains brim

coming back to this
tangle of inedible blue berries

hanging along the ground
where the car will twist back

hesitantly skilfully
missing the worst of it

Cid Corman The research

I have faced the night and I am
faced with the night. It happens
each day produces an end

Here I begin, as the sun
touches clouds going, as if
wanting to feel where it is

or has been, and to find its
way back. I know: it is I
who feel, feel for the sun, for

a touch of light in the sky,
to assure myself each day
dying proceeds from the heart.

Now the night proves me. I search,
as if to find words for sleep,
as if to compose a sleep.

Cid Corman The demonstration

No, no, nothing. This

At Santo Spirito -

Cid Corman At Santo Spirito

At that hour, fishing. No right to be there
But had to be, there, that reach eyes desired,
fire leapt, net lifted water, pitched and strained

black. Or those could be, unlike what we were,
butterflies flaring, striking at our eyes
to die in us. And what was there is not.

The ground become rock. The reek of caged flesh.
My walk breaks on the edges. And I stop
then, suddenly, alone, and look out and,

no longer with a wing to hang upon,
out into whatever, sky or abyss,
into the darkness that comes back and in,

and where the light had fluttered and gone down,
suspending me, is only space I breathe,
breath itself, and I can see through night night.

Cid Corman The Conversation

It was a dark night
as most nights are

we sat rooted
in the darkest part

light shattering
the shapes of doorways

beyond us
the high city standing

white stone to mute
purposes of love

why do we sit
rustling trees for thought

why does night
exagerate shadows

be taking them in
complete shelter

as if death spoke
the words that love lacked
1961

Cid Corman The Day

It clears. And the sun
throws light on the dust
on the window, the

constancy of that
mist. To see "if the
weather is with us",

and it is. It is
amazing how much
a window let in

or out. Part of a
cross from a tower
on a puddle on

a connecting walk,
white waterpipes that
sidles up sides of

white buildings to tie
tin cornices to
ground, other windows

polished by indi -
rections of reflec -
tions. Quiet. The sky.
